Don’t Let Trends Run Your Closet (Or Your Confidence)
A Gen Z video crossed my feed recently, poking fun at millennials for “always” wearing a denim jacket. I’ll admit, I took it a little personally. Denim is basically my uniform. It’s the one piece I can always count on to complete an outfit, and it’s usually the first thing I recommend to clients who want to add something casual that still feels elevated.

But it got me thinking about a trap a lot of us fall into, especially in our 30s and 40s: letting society decide what counts as “good style.”
Here’s the thing: trends shouldn’t run the show. A few reasons why:
Left unchecked, trend-chasing turns into a cycle that leaves you feeling stuck between what you actually like and what everyone says you should like.

To be clear, I’m not anti-trend. As a stylist, I’ll never tell you to ignore them completely. I’ll tell you to use discernment. If a trend genuinely works for you, ease in with one or two new pieces. If it highlights something you’re not comfortable with, or does nothing for your personal style, skip it. No guilt required.
Case in point: the drop-waist dress. It’s everywhere right now, and I’m just not a fan. It erases waist definition, which, especially for fuller midsections, is often the thing that makes an outfit work. Waist definition is core to dressing so many different body types well.

A trend I am here for: the slip dress. It’s flattering across body types, and honestly, it’ll likely outlast the drop-waist as an evergreen staple long after this cycle ends.

At the end of the day, focus on what feels and looks good on you. Society can be a data point, it shouldn’t be the final word on your style.
What trend are you loving right now? What’s one you can’t get behind? Reply and tell me; I’m genuinely curious.
